Our Story

In a nutshell, we were fed up with the corporate treadmill. When we decided to change careers, we looked for a website to help us escape – except there wasn’t one. So we started our own. Over four years later and we have started a movement called Escape the City.

Over 140,000 people have joined www.escapethecity.org in pursuit of exciting and unconventional careers. We were the first online start-up in the world to raise more than £600,000 in investment through equity crowdfunding – and we did this entirely from our own membership.

Our Mission

We are on a mission to help the world’s professionals make exciting career moves. Our goal is to help as many people as possible escape unfulfilling jobs and ‘do something different’ with their lives.

We dream of a world where we can match peoples’ aspirations with genuine opportunities. It’s not about opting out, it’s about rejecting unfulfilling work and opting into the challenges we chose for ourselves.

Although this idea came from our corporate jobs, we are building the tools to help any professional make a career transition regardless of their current position, location or industry (and we’re getting there!).

Read more about our journey (what we’re building, why and a few answers to peoples’ most commonly asked questions about our name, our areas of operation and our plans) right here and here.

Our Product

We are hard at work over on the main site building profiles to match you with new opportunities that fit both your past experience and future aspirations. Tell us what you’re looking for, we’ll help you find it.

Our HQ is in London. Half our members are UK-based & half are international. Our jobs are split about 50-50 between UK & “Rest of World”. As we grow this will change, so please bear with us! It’s about a lot more than just jobs.

Escape the City is a business but first and foremost it is a community – a community with a shared philosophy – life is too short to do work that doesn’t matter to you.

Good places to meet the community are our questions thread & our collection of +1000 escape interviews. At The Escape School you’ll find guides, courses, events & essays to help with your transition.

Quitting our corporate jobs to build Escape has been an incredibly rewarding experience. We are living the same transition as many of our members. We know how hard it is. We also know it’s possible.

Good luck with your plans. Whether you want to find a new job, start a business, or go on a big adventure we hope Escape the City will be able to play a part. And please do keep us posted.

All the best,

Rob, Dom & Mikey
