I am currently on a sabbatical from being a consultant at IBM too! snap Great post, I couldn’t agree with your points more. I am due back in April but may look to extend if I can as I am just getting going with setting something up (lesson: I should have asked for longer!)

I actually have just done this too and couldn’t agree more with the part about commitment. Once the path I was going to take was clear the discussion was simple and could only have ended one of two ways, either by resigning (and breaking stuff around the office) or by coming back in 6 months.

As it happens my time off was approved within about a week and a leaving date set for 6 months after that.

I took 6 months off and went and worked in a zoo in South Africa, whilst spending time with my South African partner who will now shortly be coming back to the UK. It was the nest decision of my life!!

The hardest part though is being motivated to go back to the four walls and I am really struggling at the moment back in the cold and the snow and again dreaming of escapes, but for now, its back to the grind.
