‘Make the money, don’t let the money make you’

This post is part of a warmup for our Startup 101 courses happening on Feb 19th and Feb 25th (as well as these dates here) – remaining spaces still available, and you can have a sneak peek at the prep book (full of useful links and resources) here

I was listening to this Macklemore song and it reminded me how the talks I’ve had with Escape members have often mirrored those encouraging a friend to leave a relationship that looks fine on the outside, but seems like it could be detrimental in the long-term.

Many Escape members are in an emotionally abusive relationship with their paycheque; a shotgun marriage that they attribute to social or parental pressure; one that now defines so much of their time and through that definition leaves them feeling both claustrophobic and lost.

Our relationship with money is a ghost lingering over so many of our subconscious decisions. But it’s not even about money. It’s about our relationship with power.

Money makes life comfortable. But comfortable isn’t the same as meaningful. Starting your own business makes life more uncomfortable, but often, it’s in that discomfort that we discover what we were looking for all along.

I love how Nassim Nicholas Taleb put it: “You are rich if and only if money you refuse tastes better than money you accept.” Macklemore sings the same thing here:

Listen, see I was meant to be a warrior

Fight something amongst me, leave here victorious

Classroom of kids, or a venue performing

If I’d had done for the money I’d have been a fucking lawyer

Concrete, vagabond, van telling stories

Humbled by the road, I’m realizing I’m not important

See life’s a beautiful struggle, I record it

Hope it helps you maneuvering through yours and

That’s why we stay in the lab at night

I’ve been staring into this pad for over half my life

A true artist won’t be satisfied

So I guess that’s the sacrifice

And I say…

Make the money, don’t let the money make you

Change the game, don’t let the game change you.
