Advice for ‘Starting Something You Love’ – #45: Adele Barlow

by Rob on March 24, 2011

At the beginning of 2011 we started a campaign called Start Something You Love. We kicked it off on 19th January with our big Esc winter party in front of 600 people at Guanabara bar in central London.

We are now following it up with 365 bits of advice from real people who are doing interesting and inspirational things with their lives. And we asked them all the same question:

ESC’S QUESTION: “HOW CAN I START SOMETHING I LOVE?”

ADELE’S ANSWER:

“Pam gave me a bracelet engraved with a quote from Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford speech: “Don’t settle.” It’s based on a part on his speech where he talks about staying hungry and foolish – feeding that desire to keep discovering, instead of letting life get stagnant.

Take baby steps: “quitting” and “starting a new life” are very big ideas, and breaking things down into tasks can make all the difference. Time management is also a hugely important skill, especially when you’re in a start-up. Read, read, read – there is a science and formula to launching an effective business, and it isn’t rocket science.

Start-ups, social media, the future…
